The currency in Vancouver is the Canadian Dollar (CAD). You can check the current exchange rate here. Depending on your citizenship, you may require a temporary resident visa to visit Canada. Please visit the Canadian Immigration website to check the list of countries requiring visas. If you need to apply for a visa, you can obtain further information by following the "Visiting Canada" links at the top right of the immigration webpage.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is located just 16 km (10 miles) from Vancouver International Airport (YVR). This is the recommended portal for attendees arriving from outside the Pacific Norhwest region. The airport has non-stop flights from many cities in North America, Europe and Asia.

Ground transportation from Vancouver Airport

By taxi

Taxis are readily available outside both the Domestic and International terminals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ask for Gage residences: 5959 Student Union Boulevard on UBC Campus. The fare should be approximately $ 35 for up to four or five people (depending on vehicle). Some of the licensed taxis from the airport accept major credit cards. If you intend to pay with a credit card, please tell the airport taxihost and then double check with the driver before you depart.

By bus

Take bus #424 to Airport Station, transfer to bus #98 B-Line, get off at Granville St at Broadway and transfer to either the #17 UBC or #99 UBC buses. The fare is $ 2.50 per person. When boarding the bus cash fares must be paid in exact change. A change machine is available in the Domestic Terminal located near the exit doors closest to the transit area. Bus tickets may also be purchased at the 7-eleven convenience store and the Pharmasave pharmacy, both located in the Domestic Terminal. When transfering between buses ask the driver for a transfer ticket as you get off (valid 90 min).

By car

Several car rental companies are located within the terminal at Vancouver airport and there are additional off-airport locations with shuttle service from the terminal. Driving directions from Vancouver airport to Gage residences are here.

Ground transportation from other locations

Seattle is about 250 km (160 miles) south of Vancouver across the US border. Seattle is served by Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Flying into Seattle is not the recommended route to Vancouver, but would be possible if flight availabiliy and/or cost prohibit flying to Vancouver. There are bus and train services between Seattle and Vancouver from Amtrak (downtown Seattle to downtown Vancouver), Greyhound (downtown Seattle to downtown Vancouver) and Quickshuttle (Seattle airport to Vancouver airport or downtown). These connections do not serve UBC directly and so would require additional transportation on arrival in Vancouver. Driving from Seattle to Vancouver usually takes around 2½ hours plus any delay at the border (usually between 5 and 90 min). If you rent a car in Seattle, you will need to check that your contract allows you to enter Canada. Note that crossing the border from USA to Canada by road entails the same immigration and customs procedures as arriving by air.
